Adam Sandurski (born 8 February 1953 in Zarzecze near Rzeszów; died 21 February 2026 in Witten) was a Polish freestyle wrestler in the super-heavyweight class. He won bronze at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and was among the leading international wrestlers in his weight class during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Origin and club

Sandurski came from the Rzeszów region in south-eastern Poland. His sporting home became Stal Rzeszów, a club with which his name remained closely connected. His height and strength drew attention early, but his career did not rest on physical qualities alone. Freestyle wrestling demanded balance, grip work, stamina and tactical patience.

Rise in super-heavyweight wrestling

In Poland Sandurski won several national titles in the super-heavyweight class. Internationally he competed in a division where physical presence alone was not enough, because opponents from the Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria, the United States and other wrestling countries were technically and tactically strong. Between 1979 and 1986 Sandurski collected medals at world and European championships and became a reliable points winner for Polish wrestling.

1980 Olympic Games

The sporting high point came at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In freestyle super-heavyweight wrestling Sandurski won the bronze medal. The event was held from 29 to 31 July and ended with gold for Soslan Andiyev of the Soviet Union, silver for József Balla of Hungary and bronze for Sandurski. For Poland, the medal was a visible result in a sport with a strong national tradition.

Later career

Sandurski remained present internationally after Moscow. He was third at the 1981 World Championships, runner-up in 1982 and 1983, and won further medals at European championships. In 1988 he competed again at the Olympic Games in Seoul and placed seventh in the super-heavyweight class. His career shows the long strain of an athlete who stayed competitive in a heavy weight class for many years.

Farewell

Adam Sandurski died in Witten on 21 February 2026. He was 73 years old. In Polish sporting history he remains connected above all with the bronze medal from Moscow, Stal Rzeszów and a steady international career.
