Alexander "Alex" Manninger (born 4 June 1977 in Salzburg; died 16 April 2026 in Nußdorf am Haunsberg) was an Austrian football goalkeeper. He played for clubs in Austria, England, Italy, Spain and Germany, including Arsenal, Juventus, FC Augsburg and Liverpool. He won 33 caps for Austria and was part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2008. His career was shaped less by loudness than by reliability, patience and the willingness to accept an often unseen but important role in major teams.

Salzburg and the move abroad

Manninger was born in Salzburg and began his career in the youth setup of Austria Salzburg. After further spells in Austria, he moved to Arsenal in England in 1997. For an Austrian goalkeeper this was an unusual step: the Premier League was a fast, physical and demanding environment. Manninger did not arrive as a star, but as a young goalkeeper behind David Seaman. That meant he had to learn early to be ready at any moment without being at the center of attention every week.

Arsenal and the role behind the number one

At Arsenal, Manninger was part of the squad that won the 1997/98 Premier League and FA Cup double. His importance lay not only in trophies, but in the periods when he stepped in for the injured Seaman and brought calm to the team. This kind of career is easily overlooked in football: a second goalkeeper often becomes visible only when something goes wrong. Manninger turned that role into a professional strength. He was prepared, composed and team-oriented.

Italy, Augsburg and Juventus

After Arsenal, his path led mainly to Italy. He played for Fiorentina, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Udinese and Juventus, among others. At Juventus he worked in an environment of the highest expectations and stood behind Gianluigi Buffon, one of the great goalkeepers of his era. There too Manninger's profile was clear: experience, training quality, calmness and reliability. Later he played in the Bundesliga for FC Augsburg, again showing that his career did not depend on one club, but on adaptability across very different football cultures.

National team and Liverpool

Manninger made his Austria debut against Sweden on 18 August 1999. He won 33 senior caps and was part of Austria's squad at the home European Championship in 2008. In 2016 he returned to the Premier League with Liverpool. There he was an experienced backup, did not play a competitive match, but was valued as a calm professional in a young goalkeeping group. After the 2016/17 season he ended his playing career.
