Brigitte Hamann, born Brigitte Deitert (26 July 1940 in Essen; died 4 October 2016 in Vienna), was a German-Austrian historian, author and journalist. Her books on Crown Prince Rudolf, Empress Elisabeth, Hitler's Vienna, Bertha von Suttner and Winifred Wagner made historical figures, archives and political milieus readable for a wide audience.

Essen, Münster and Vienna

Hamann grew up in the Ruhr region and studied German literature and history in Münster and Vienna. After training with the German Press Agency, she worked as an editor in Essen. In 1965 she married the Viennese historian Günther Hamann and moved to Vienna. Austria, its archives and its political history became the center of her work.

Crown Prince Rudolf and Elisabeth

Her dissertation on Crown Prince Rudolf appeared in 1978 as Rudolf. Kronprinz und Rebell. In 1982 she published Elisabeth. Kaiserin wider Willen. Hamann moved Empress Elisabeth away from many romantic Sisi images and placed court, family, physical crises, travel and political surroundings beside one another. The book's success carried her work beyond academic readership.

Hitler's Vienna

With Hitlers Wien. Lehrjahre eines Diktators, Hamann examined Adolf Hitler's Vienna years. She looked at urban milieu, antisemitism, poverty, political currents and personal development. The book was widely received in scholarship because it read Hitler's early years through many local sources rather than through later self-interpretations.

Further work

Hamann also wrote about Bertha von Suttner, Maria Theresa, Winifred Wagner and Eduard Bloch, the Jewish doctor of Hitler's mother. A recurring concern in her work was the way private decisions and political systems interlock. She wrote close to the sources, but accessibly, opening historical subjects to readers who were not looking for specialist language.

Vienna

Brigitte Hamann died in Vienna on 4 October 2016. She was 76 years old. Her work remains connected with archival care, narrative clarity and attention to the ambivalences of Austrian and German history.
