Dieter Burdenski (born 26 November 1950 in Bremen; died 9 October 2024 in Bremen) was a German football goalkeeper. At Werder Bremen he became the club's record Bundesliga player, honorary captain and a defining figure between the posts.

Football family and first clubs

Burdenski was born in Bremen and grew up close to football. His father Herbert Burdenski was a German international and scored West Germany's first postwar international goal in 1950. Dieter Burdenski played in Schalke 04's youth teams, also appeared at professional level there and then moved to Arminia Bielefeld.

Werder Bremen

In 1972 Burdenski joined Werder Bremen. There he became the regular number one for many years. The club records 444 Bundesliga matches and 582 competitive appearances for the green-and-whites. Burdenski was not a goalkeeper of grand poses, but one of consistency: quick in reaction, resilient and often the player who kept an uncertain team in the game. In Bremen he became familiar under the nickname Budde.

National team

Burdenski played twelve matches for the German national team. In 1978 he was part of the squad at the World Cup in Argentina, and in 1984 he was in the squad at the European Championship in France. His international career fell into a period in which Sepp Maier and later other goalkeepers strongly shaped public perception. Burdenski nevertheless remained a reliable option for years.

After the playing career

After the end of his long Werder years, Burdenski played short spells abroad and later returned to Bremen. From 1997 to 2005 he worked as Werder's goalkeeping coach. During that period the club won the DFB-Pokal in 1999 and the league-and-cup double in 2004. Burdenski remained closely connected with the club, its tradition team and the city afterwards.

Farewell

Dieter Burdenski died in Bremen on 9 October 2024. He was 73 years old. His name remains connected with Werder Bremen in rare density: player, record holder, coach, honorary captain and a goalkeeper whose long presence at the Weserstadion became part of the club's history.
