Biography

Occupation(2)

rabbicommunity organizer

Dovid Michael Shmidel (born 1934 in Vienna; died 11 May 2026 in Bnei Brak) was an Israeli rabbi of Austrian origin. He became known above all as a longtime leading figure of Atra Kadisha, a Haredi organization that campaigns against the disturbance of Jewish graves and ancient burial sites. His public life connected rabbinic authority, Talmudic learning and decades of disputes over construction and excavation projects.

Vienna, childhood and religious formation

Shmidel was born in Vienna in 1934. In 1939 he came with his family to what was then British-controlled Mandatory Palestine. He later studied at the Slabodka yeshiva in Bnei Brak and was connected with major rabbinic teachers, including the Chazon Ish, Rabbi Gedaliah Nadel and Rabbi Moshe Shmuel Shapiro. He understood dignity, burial and the treatment of the dead as religious obligations, not as marginal questions of public life.

Atra Kadisha

From the 1950s onward Shmidel was involved in campaigns against interference with sites believed to contain Jewish graves. His activity at the Tomb of Maimonides in Tiberias in 1956 became especially visible. In the 1970s he took on a leading role in Atra Kadisha. Under his leadership the organization became a fixed and often highly visible voice in conflicts over archaeological excavations, roads, housing projects and cemeteries in Israel and beyond.

Learning and teaching

Alongside his activism, Shmidel remained present in the Haredi world as a scholar and teacher. He was connected with the Metivta D'Rabbi Yochanan kollel in Tiberias and later in Komemiyut, and worked on the Shabsi Frankel Institute Talmud project. This double role shaped his standing: he was not only an organizer of public protests, but also a rabbinic authority for people who saw questions of burial, halacha and public responsibility as closely connected.

Public conflicts

Shmidel's work repeatedly led to disputes with authorities, construction firms and archaeologists. Reports about Atra Kadisha describe demonstrations, conflicts at building sites and sharp criticism of state decisions. Supporters saw the same work as the defense of religious duties toward the dead. For others, the organization's methods remained a contested part of Israel's handling of archaeology, infrastructure and religious law.

Farewell

Dovid Shmidel died in Bnei Brak on 11 May 2026 at the age of 92. In July 2025 he had still appeared publicly at a protest in Yehud. His funeral procession led from Bnei Brak to Jerusalem, where he was buried on the Mount of Olives. His life connects the history of Vienna, the Haredi world of Bnei Brak and Israeli debates about graves, memory and religious authority.
