Egon Loy (born 14 May 1931 in Schwabach; died 15 May 2026) was a German football goalkeeper. He played for Eintracht Frankfurt from 1954 to 1967, won the German championship in 1959 and was in goal for the legendary 1960 European Cup final against Real Madrid. For Eintracht he was more than a player from a successful era: he remained attached to the club for decades and became one of the defining figures of its early international history.

From Schwabach to Frankfurt

Loy was born in Middle Franconia and joined Eintracht in 1954. As goalkeeper of a team still playing in the Oberliga Süd, he faced demands different from those of later professionals: less protection, heavier balls, crowded penalty areas and a game in which goalkeepers had to endure a great deal physically. At Frankfurt he became a fixture. Eintracht records 349 appearances during his time at the club and describes him as one of the influential players in its history.

German champions in 1959

The national high point came on 28 June 1959. Eintracht Frankfurt won the German championship final in Berlin against Kickers Offenbach, 5-3 after extra time. For Frankfurt it was the club's first and still only German league title. Loy belonged to that side as the goalkeeper behind it; the title also prepared Eintracht for its great European run in the following season.

Glasgow 1960

In the 1959/60 season Eintracht Frankfurt reached the final of the European Cup. The semi-final matches against Rangers were already extraordinary before Real Madrid awaited at Hampden Park on 18 May 1960. Frankfurt lost 7-3, but the match became one of the most famous European Cup finals. Loy was in goal wearing black and a cap. From that came the nickname Black Panther, which accompanied him for the rest of his life.

Bundesliga and cup final

When the Bundesliga began in 1963, Loy was still Frankfurt's number one. He played for Eintracht in the first Bundesliga years and was also in goal for the DFB Cup final against TSV 1860 Munich on 13 June 1964. Later Peter Kunter moved ahead of him, but Loy remained part of the club's memory: a goalkeeper from the transition between Oberliga football and the Bundesliga, connected with the championship, the European Cup and the early years of the new league.

Connected with Eintracht

Even after his playing career, Loy stayed close to Eintracht. The club honoured him as a member for more than 70 years. When Frankfurt won the Europa League in 2022, Loy followed the triumph at home on television because of his age. That quiet loyalty fitted the way he was remembered: not as a loud self-promoter, but as a figure through whom club history remained personally tangible.

Farewell

Egon Loy died on 15 May 2026, one day after his 95th birthday. Eintracht Frankfurt mourned a championship goalkeeper who embodied a special period for the city and the club. His name remains connected with the 1959 title, the European Cup night in Glasgow and long, quiet loyalty to Eintracht.
