Memorial Page for Engin Fırat

Engin Fırat (born 11 June 1970 in Istanbul; died 9 March 2026 in Istanbul) was a Turkish football coach. His career took him through clubs and national teams in Turkey, Germany, South Korea, Iran, Moldova, Kenya and Lebanon. In East Africa his name was closely associated with Kenya's national team, the Harambee Stars.

Early coaching years

Fırat began in Turkish football and worked early in coaching staffs, including at Samsunspor and Antalyaspor. He later became part of Werner Lorant's circle and worked at Eintracht Frankfurt and Fenerbahçe. These years brought him into different football cultures: the Turkish league, German club work and international match preparation. For a coach who was not defined by a long playing career, such positions formed the core of his profile.

Clubs in several countries

As a head coach and assistant, Fırat later worked in South Korea, Iran and Turkey. His clubs included Incheon United, Kayseri Erciyesspor, Sepahan, Gostaresh Foolad and Saipa. Iran in particular remained a recurring place of work: there he gathered experience in club football, coach education and as part of the Iranian national team staff. His career was rarely linear; it shows a coach who approached his work internationally from an early stage.

Moldova and Kenya

In 2019 Fırat became coach of Moldova's national team. In 2021 he took charge of Kenya, initially on a short contract for the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches. He later stayed longer in the role and coached the Harambee Stars during an unsettled period for Kenyan football. Results were assessed differently in Kenya, while he worked with a squad drawn from the Kenyan league and from clubs across several countries.

Work with Harambee Stars

Fırat's time in Kenya was demanding in sporting and organizational terms. The team was looking for stability while the federation, supporters and politics placed high expectations on the national side. Media and federation reports linked his resignation in December 2024 with results and unpaid salary issues. For several Kenyan players he nevertheless remained a coach who trusted them and maintained connections across borders.

Final club

At the beginning of 2026 Fırat worked for Lebanese club Nejmeh SC. There he again encountered players he knew from his time in Kenya. The appointment lasted a few weeks. When Nejmeh SC confirmed his death, the club also described his journey from Beirut through Istanbul toward Adana.

Farewell

Engin Fırat died on 9 March 2026 at Istanbul Airport after a heart attack. He had been travelling from Beirut back to Turkey. He was 55 years old. His path in football remains connected with a cross-border coaching career: clubs and national teams on several continents, changing conditions and a working life that extended far beyond Turkish football.
