Francis Buchholz (born 19 February 1954 in Hanover; died 22 January 2026) was a German bassist, entrepreneur and long-time member of Scorpions. From 1973 to 1992 he played in the band and belonged to the line-up with which Scorpions grew from Hanover into an internationally successful rock group.

Hanover and early years

Buchholz came from Hanover, a city that was more than a place of origin for Scorpions. It offered a network of musicians, rehearsal rooms, equipment and early performance opportunities. Before joining Scorpions, Buchholz played with Uli Jon Roth in Dawn Road. In 1973 Roth and Buchholz joined Scorpions, and the band entered a new phase.

Bass with Scorpions

His first Scorpions studio recording was Fly to the Rainbow in 1974. He went on to play on albums including In Trance, Virgin Killer, Taken by Force, Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, Love at First Sting and Crazy World. His bass rarely pushed itself to the front, but it gave the songs weight, structure and forward motion. In a band shaped strongly by guitars, voice and choruses, that rhythmic reliability mattered.

International breakthrough

With Buchholz on bass, Scorpions grew from a German hard rock band into a group touring worldwide. In the 1980s, Blackout and Love at First Sting helped consolidate the band's international breakthrough. Songs such as Rock You Like a Hurricane and later Wind of Change became fixed reference points in Scorpions history. Buchholz was part of the musical foundation in that period: precise, restrained and focused on the shared band sound.

Technology, business and Rocksound

Away from the stage, Buchholz also worked on the technical and business side of the band's life. He was connected with Rocksound, a company for sound and lighting equipment, and took on tasks within the Scorpions organization beyond playing bass. This side of his work explains why his role cannot be reduced to individual bass lines: Buchholz moved between music, touring, technology and business questions.

Departure and later appearances

His time with Scorpions ended in 1992. After that Buchholz appeared in public less often for many years. Later he became visible again around former companions, including Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock. These appearances reconnected him with shared history without smoothing over his distance from the later Scorpions years.

Farewell

Francis Buchholz died of cancer on 22 January 2026 at the age of 71. His family and Scorpions made his death public. His career remains connected with a period in which German rock music became internationally visible: as a bassist, as part of a durable band line-up and as someone who carried the sound of Scorpions for almost two decades.
