Francisco Varela (* September 7, 1946 in Talcahuano; † May 28, 2001 in Paris) was a chilean biologist. He was 54 years old. He was married to Amy Cohen-Varela. His education included Harvard University, University of Chile, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and Colegio del Verbo Divino. His faith was Tibetan Buddhism. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship. His cause of death was myocardial infarction.
