Frank Mill (born 23 July 1958 in Essen; died 5 August 2025 in Essen) was a German footballer. The striker won the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund, earned Olympic bronze with West Germany in 1988 and was part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad in 1990.

Beginnings in Essen

Mill came from Essen and found his way into football in the Ruhr area early on. After spells with BV Eintracht 1916 and Rot-Weiss Essen, he entered the professional game in 1976. At Rot-Weiss Essen he developed into a prolific striker. In the 1980/81 season he became top scorer in the 2. Bundesliga Nord, a step that made him a clear candidate for the Bundesliga.

Borussia Mönchengladbach

In 1981 Mill moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach. There he confirmed his qualities at a higher level and scored regularly over five years. The Gladbach years turned the Essen goalscorer into an established Bundesliga player. He also drew attention in European competition, including in the UEFA Cup against Real Madrid, when Borussia Mönchengladbach won a memorable home match in autumn 1985.

Borussia Dortmund

Mill joined Borussia Dortmund in 1986. BVB were going through a difficult phase, but with Mill and Norbert Dickel the attack gained new force. Mill played for Dortmund until 1994 and remained especially connected with the DFB-Pokal final of 24 June 1989. Against Werder Bremen he scored the goal for 2-1, set up further goals and helped secure the 4-1 victory. For Dortmund, that cup win became an important turning point.

National team and Olympics

Mill won 17 caps for the German national team. At the 1988 European Championship he appeared on home soil. His role in the Olympic team was even more defining: in 1988 he captained West Germany to the bronze medal in Seoul. Two years later he was part of Germany's squad at the World Cup in Italy. He did not play in the tournament, but belonged to the team that won the title in Rome on 8 July 1990.

After professional football

After his time in Dortmund, Mill played for Fortuna Düsseldorf, helped the club win promotion to the Bundesliga and ended his active career there. He then remained connected to football through his football school, legends teams and encounters with young players. In Dortmund and Essen in particular, he remained present as a grounded footballer from the Ruhr area.

Farewell

Frank Mill died in Essen on 5 August 2025. He was 67 years old. Borussia Dortmund and the German Football Association honoured him as a player who left traces in clubs, national teams and later in youth work. His career stands for scoring instinct, team spirit and a close connection to Ruhr football.
