Memorial Page for Imants Ziedonis

Imants Ziedonis (born 3 May 1933 in Ragaciems; died 27 February 2013 in Riga) was a Latvian poet, prose writer, publicist, translator and cultural figure. His poems, miniatures, children's books and essays accompanied several generations in Latvia and connected everyday life, nature, language and national self-assertion.

Ragaciems and Riga

Ziedonis was born in Ragaciems into a fisherman's family. After school he studied philology at the University of Latvia in Riga and graduated in 1959. He later attended advanced literary courses in Moscow. Before and alongside writing, he worked as a librarian, road construction worker, teacher and literary editor. That closeness to practical work, landscape and spoken language remained tangible in many of his texts.

Poems and Epiphanies

His first full poetry collection, Zemes un sapņu smilts, appeared in 1961. In the following years he published books such as Sirds dinamīts, Motocikls and Es ieeju sevī. In the 1970s Ziedonis turned intensively toward Latvian folk culture. From that work came his Epifānijas, short and compressed prose pieces, as well as fairy tales and children's books including Krāsainās pasakas.

Culture and public life

Ziedonis wrote in Soviet-occupied Latvia with an open, image-rich and often idiosyncratic language. His essays and public initiatives touched questions of culture, landscape, education and responsibility. He worked around the Latvian Culture Foundation and supported projects that drew attention to Dainas, old trees, local histories and cultural memory.

Atmoda

During the Latvian re-awakening movement, Atmoda, Ziedonis also entered politics. In 1990 he was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia. On 4 May 1990 he was among the deputies who voted for the declaration restoring Latvia's independence. Literature and political action therefore stood close together in his life, while his texts remained broader than day-to-day politics.

Riga and Ragaciems

Imants Ziedonis died in Riga on 27 February 2013. He was 79 years old and was buried at the cemetery in Ragaciems. His work remains connected in Latvia with poetic language, cultural self-examination and the question of how a country perceives its landscape, its words and its freedom.
