Inge Keller (born 15 December 1923 in Berlin; died there on 6 February 2017) was a German actress. For many decades she belonged to the Deutsches Theater Berlin and connected classical roles, modern stage direction, film appearances and readings into a career closely tied to Berlin theatre history.

Training and first stages

Keller was born in Berlin and studied from 1939 to 1942 at the private Helmut Bergmann acting school. She made her debut in 1942 at the Theater am Kurfuerstendamm. Engagements followed in Freiberg, Chemnitz, at the Hebbel Theater and at the Schlosspark Theater. These early stations led her through very different theatre spaces in a city shaped by political and cultural change.

Deutsches Theater

From the early 1950s Keller worked at the Deutsches Theater and the Kammerspiele in Berlin. She remained an ensemble member until around the turn of the millennium and continued to appear there as a guest. She worked with directors including Rudolf Noelte, Wolfgang Langhoff, Wolfgang Heinz, Thomas Langhoff, Einar Schleef, Michael Thalheimer and Robert Wilson. The theatre became an artistic home where roles could mature over long periods.

Roles and voice

Her key stage roles included Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, Iphigenia in Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris, Mrs Alving in Ibsen's Ghosts and Claire Zachanassian in Duerrenmatt's The Visit. Keller's acting drew on bearing, verbal control and a cool presence that could hold tension even in quiet moments. Readings of texts by Stefan Zweig, Thomas Mann, Ingeborg Bachmann and other authors also belonged to her later work.

Film, family and honors

Keller also appeared in film and television. In 1999 she became known to a wider cinema audience again through Aimee and Jaguar. Her marriage to Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler produced a daughter, Barbara Schnitzler, who also became an actress. Keller was a member of the Akademie der Kuenste, became an honorary member of the Deutsches Theater and in 2013 received the German theatre award Der Faust for lifetime achievement.

Berlin

Inge Keller died in Berlin on 6 February 2017. She was 93 years old. Her work remains connected with a form of acting that brought together language, distance and inner movement, giving Berlin theatre an unmistakable face over many decades.
