Jörg Demus (born 2 December 1928 in St. Pölten; died 16 April 2019 in Vienna) was an Austrian pianist, composer and teacher. He performed as a soloist, song accompanist and chamber musician, worked with singers including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling and Peter Schreier, and devoted sustained attention to historical keyboard instruments.

Background and training

Demus was born into an artistic family. His father Otto Demus was an art historian, and his mother Erika Demus was a concert violinist. He began piano lessons at six and entered the Vienna State Academy of Music at eleven. There he studied piano, organ, conducting and composition. This broad training shaped his musicianship: for Demus, the piano was connected with song, form, tone colour and musical structure.

Early appearances

While still young, Demus appeared in the Brahms-Saal of Vienna's Musikverein. After his studies he went to Paris to work with Yves Nat and later took lessons with Walter Gieseking. In the early 1950s appearances followed in London, Zurich and South America. In 1956 he won first prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano. That success strengthened his international career without fixing him to a single role.

Soloist, song partner and chamber musician

Demus played a wide repertoire from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert to Schumann and Debussy. He became especially visible as a partner in song and chamber music. With Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling and Peter Schreier he gave recitals and made recordings; with Paul Badura-Skoda he played piano duets and published a book on Beethoven's piano sonatas. In this work, language, breathing and dialogue mattered alongside pianistic brilliance.

Historical instruments

A special part of his work was devoted to fortepianos and other historical keyboard instruments. Demus collected such instruments, performed on them and showed how strongly sound, touch and expression change from one instrument to another. In Weyregg am Attersee he connected this collection with courses and a museum. His interest in old instruments was not nostalgia, but a search for closeness to the sound worlds of composers.

Teaching and recognition

Demus taught in Vienna and Stuttgart and gave courses in Europe, America and Asia. His honors included the Beethoven Ring of the Vienna Beethoven Society, the Mozart Medal of the Mozartgemeinde Wien, the Jakob Prandtauer Prize and the Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau. These honors reflect different sides of his profile: Austrian musical tradition, attention to Schumann, historical performance practice and lifelong work with young musicians.

Farewell

Jörg Demus died in Vienna on 16 April 2019. He was 90 years old. His name remains connected with a quiet, searching form of piano playing: attentive to text and sound, close to singers, open to old instruments and shaped by a long Viennese musical tradition.
