Karin Dor (born Kätherose Derr on 22 February 1938 in Wiesbaden; died 6 November 2017 in Munich) was a German actress. She became known in West German genre cinema of the 1960s and reached international audiences through You Only Live Twice and Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz.

Beginnings in film

Dor grew up in Wiesbaden, took acting and ballet lessons and first entered film work as an extra. The director Harald Reinl cast her in early roles and became her first husband. In the 1950s she appeared in Heimat films, operetta subjects and melodramas. These early works gave her an image as a young, often gentle heroine, an image she later expanded in crime and adventure films.

Wallace, Karl May and German genre cinema

In the 1960s Karin Dor became a familiar face of popular German cinema. She appeared in Edgar Wallace adaptations such as Der grüne Bogenschütze and in Karl May films including Der Schatz im Silbersee and Winnetou II. Audiences knew her from thrillers, adventure films and historical subjects. In Die Nibelungen she played Brunhild and showed a stricter, less naive side of her acting.

International roles

In 1967 Dor appeared opposite Sean Connery in You Only Live Twice as the SPECTRE agent Helga Brandt. The role made her internationally visible without explaining her whole career. Two years later she worked with Alfred Hitchcock on Topaz, playing Juanita de Cordoba. These two films remained her best-known English-language works. They did not lead to a lasting Hollywood career, but they showed that Dor could do more than the German serial image with which she was often associated.

Television and stage

From the 1970s onward Dor appeared less often in cinema and more often in television and stage productions. She worked in German series, popular theatre and touring productions, and later returned to selected film roles. Margarethe von Trotta cast her in I Am the Other Woman and in The Misplaced World, her final feature film. Dor continued to act on stage into old age and remained practically connected to the profession.

Later years

After a period in the United States, Karin Dor lived in Germany again. Her third husband, the stuntman and producer George Robotham, died in 2007. Dor continued to perform, even though her health was affected in her final years. Public memory often condensed her career to Bond, Hitchcock, Winnetou and Edgar Wallace; her long body of work shows an actress who spent decades moving between popular cinema, television and theatre.

Karin Dor died in Munich on 6 November 2017. She was 79 years old. Her name remains connected with a phase of German postwar cinema in which genre, international aspiration and popular film culture were closely intertwined.
