Karl-Josef Rauber (born 11 April 1934 in Nuremberg; died 26 March 2023 in Rottenburg) was a German Roman Catholic priest, archbishop, diplomat of the Holy See and cardinal. For decades he served in Vatican diplomacy, including posts connected with Uganda, Hungary, Moldova, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Training and priesthood

Rauber grew up in Germany, attended the Benedictine school in Metten and then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Mainz. On 28 February 1959 he was ordained a priest in Mainz Cathedral. After early pastoral work he moved to Rome in 1962, earned a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University and attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

Service for the Holy See

In 1966 Rauber entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He first worked in the Secretariat of State, later in nunciatures in Belgium, Luxembourg and Greece. The work demanded language, patience and the ability to bring together ecclesial, political and local interests. Rauber was less a man of public display than a mediator behind visible decisions.

Africa, Europe and diplomatic tensions

On 18 December 1982 Rauber was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Uganda and titular archbishop; on 6 January 1983 he received episcopal consecration. He later led the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and took on nunciatures in several European countries. In Switzerland and Belgium his work was connected with difficult episcopal appointments and tensions within the church. Rauber sometimes spoke with unusual openness, while remaining committed to diplomatic service.

Cardinal in retirement

After the end of his active years as nuncio, Rauber lived in Rottenburg. Pope Francis made him a cardinal on 14 February 2015. The appointment came in old age and without a new governing office; it honored above all a long service that had usually taken place away from public attention. Rauber remained reserved afterwards and continued to live in Germany.

Farewell

Karl-Josef Rauber died in Rottenburg on 26 March 2023. He was 88 years old. Obituaries described him as a churchman whose career was shaped less by one diocese than by diplomatic work in many places: listening, negotiating, ordering conflicts and maintaining the connection between local churches and Rome.
