Karl Lagerfeld (born 10 September 1933 in Hamburg; died 19 February 2019 in Paris) was a German fashion designer, creative director, photographer and publisher. For decades he shaped international fashion, especially through his work for Chanel, Fendi, Chloé and his own label. Lagerfeld understood fashion as a constant translation of the past into the present: he took codes, altered them, exaggerated them and made them visible again. His white ponytail, dark glasses and high collar became a signature of their own.

From Hamburg to Paris

Lagerfeld grew up in Hamburg and northern Germany and moved to Paris as a young man. In 1954 he won the coat category of the International Wool Secretariat, later known as the Woolmark Prize. Soon afterwards he worked for Pierre Balmain, then for Jean Patou. These early years brought him into the world of haute couture, but Lagerfeld did not remain tied to one house or one method. He became an independent designer able to think for several brands at once.

Chloé and Fendi

In the 1960s Lagerfeld designed for Chloé and became an important figure in Paris ready-to-wear. In 1965 his long collaboration with Fendi began. He worked with the Roman house for more than five decades and changed its approach to fur and material. Fendi describes his arrival as the beginning of a new creative era; the “FF” he shaped stood for “Fun Fur”. Although social attitudes toward fur later changed sharply, this period remains central to understanding his method: Lagerfeld treated material not simply as tradition, but as experiment.

Chanel

In 1983 Lagerfeld became artistic director of Chanel. The house was closely tied to Gabrielle Chanel, but after her death much of its language had begun to feel fixed. Lagerfeld did not turn that inheritance into a simple retrospective. He took tweed, camellias, pearls, black and white, chains, the little black dress and the double C, then placed them in new proportions, materials and images. On 25 January 1983 he presented his first Chanel haute couture collection on Rue Cambon. From archive and present he built a system that made Chanel again one of the most influential fashion houses in the world.

Image, books and stage

Lagerfeld was not only a designer. He photographed campaigns, designed books, worked with publishers and staged fashion shows as spaces where clothing, setting, music and attitude acted together. Under him, Chanel shows at the Grand Palais became events without making the clothes disappear. At the same time he continued working for Fendi and for his own label. That simultaneity was unusual: Lagerfeld could lead several brands with clearly different voices and still remain immediately recognizable.

Public figure

His public image was controlled and sharply drawn. Lagerfeld could be brilliant, funny and generous, but also harsh, hurtful and provocative. Some of his statements were rightly criticized. These contradictions belong to his public image without reducing his work to them. Equally defining were immense discipline, an encyclopedic memory for style history, pleasure in staging and a distance with which he also turned himself into a figure.

Death and legacy

Karl Lagerfeld died in Paris on 19 February 2019. Chanel records his death in its own house history; Fendi remembered a collaboration that began in 1965 and lasted 54 years. In 2023, the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted the exhibition Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty to his work. His legacy lies in the ability to treat fashion history not only as something to preserve, but as material for the present. He did not make archives into a museum; he made them working matter for fashion that kept changing.
