Klaus Schulze (born 4 August 1947 in Berlin; died 26 April 2022) was a German composer, musician and pioneer of electronic music. He briefly played with Tangerine Dream, co-founded Ash Ra Tempel and then developed an extensive solo career that influenced ambient music, krautrock, the Berlin School and later techno and trance aesthetics.

Berlin and early groups

Schulze grew up in Berlin and as a teenager played drums, guitar and bass in various local bands. In 1969 he joined Tangerine Dream and appeared on their debut album Electronic Meditation. The role of drummer soon became too narrow for him. With Manuel Göttsching and Hartmut Enke he founded Ash Ra Tempel before concentrating on a musical language of his own.

The path to the synthesizer

Schulze searched for long arcs of tension, open sound spaces and harmonic movements that conventional rock instruments could hardly provide. The synthesizer gave him a new tool for that purpose. On early solo albums such as Irrlicht, Cyborg, Timewind, Moondawn and Mirage, he joined electronic drones, sequences, organ sounds and rhythmic patterns into extended pieces. His music asked for patience and rewarded close listening.

Berlin School

Schulze became a defining figure of the Berlin School of electronic music. His pieces were often long, slowly constructed and carried by recurring pulses. The point was not only the technology. What mattered was the dramaturgy: sounds appeared, changed, disappeared again and formed their own sense of time. This approach influenced ambient music, electronic film scores, techno, trance and many artists who later worked with sequencers and synthesizers.

Collaborations and pseudonyms

Despite his solo career, Schulze remained a musician of encounters. He worked with Stomu Yamashta, Arthur Brown, Lisa Gerrard, Pete Namlook and many others. Under the name Richard Wahnfried he released further projects, often with a stronger focus on groove, collaboration and electronic experimentation. His discography became vast: studio albums, live recordings, archive material and reissues form a world of their own.

Late recognition

In later years Schulze's influence became increasingly visible. Musicians from techno, ambient, industrial, film music and progressive rock referred to his long electronic forms. Hans Zimmer drew on Schulze's work for the music of Dune and praised his connection of soul and technology. Schulze himself remained productive, even after announcing in 2013 that he would no longer give live concerts.

Farewell

Klaus Schulze died on 26 April 2022 after suffering from renal disease. He was 74 years old. His work remains connected with a particular form of electronic music: expansive, patient, rich in sound and open to images of the future, without losing the human presence behind the machines.
