Kobe Bryant (born Kobe Bean Bryant on 23 August 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died 26 January 2020 near Calabasas, California) was an American basketball player, entrepreneur, writer and film producer. He spent his entire 20-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers, won five championships, was named league MVP in 2008 and gave two distinct chapters to the same career through his jersey numbers 8 and 24.

Philadelphia, Italy and Lower Merion

Bryant was the son of professional basketball player Joe "Jellybean" Bryant and Pamela Bryant. He spent part of his childhood in Italy, where his father continued playing after his NBA career. Those years gave him an early sense of life between languages, cities and basketball gyms. Back in the United States, Bryant became a nationally watched talent at Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania. He chose not to attend college and entered the NBA straight from high school, a step that was still unusual at the time.

A teenager with the Lakers

In 1996 Bryant was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and soon traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. There his ambition met an organization that saw more than raw promise. By his second season he was an All-Star. Under Phil Jackson and beside Shaquille O'Neal, talent, athleticism and appetite for learning grew into a team that won three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002. Bryant was not only spectacular; he was already able to carry pressure in close moments.

Style and Mamba Mentality

Bryant became one of the most uncompromising scorers in basketball history. His footwork, mid-range shooting, use of fakes and angles, and willingness to take difficult shots made him both admired and feared. The phrase Mamba Mentality later became shorthand for that attitude: work, repetition, pain threshold, concentration and the desire to keep improving even after major success.

On 22 January 2006, that side of his career condensed into one game against the Toronto Raptors: Bryant scored 81 points. The number immediately became part of his legend, but it tells only one part of the story. During that period he led the league in scoring, carried thinner Lakers teams through long nights and also remained a defender capable not only of shining, but of wearing opponents down. In 2008 he received the NBA MVP award.

Titles, Team USA and the second Lakers era

After the early three championships came a second title era. Bryant led the Lakers to the 2009 championship against Orlando and was named Finals MVP. In 2010 Los Angeles won again after a demanding series against Boston, and Bryant was once more chosen as the most valuable player of the Finals. Internationally, he also stood on the largest stage for the United States: with the national team he won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Injuries, farewell and Dear Basketball

The final years of Bryant's playing career were shaped by serious injuries, especially the torn Achilles tendon in 2013. He fought his way back, but his body set narrower limits. On 29 November 2015 he published Dear Basketball in The Players' Tribune, a love letter and farewell note to the sport. On 13 April 2016 he ended his NBA career with 60 points against the Utah Jazz. It was a final game that almost seemed too fitting to have been invented.

After the NBA

After retirement Bryant did not simply move into the background. He worked on storytelling formats, books and sports projects, and on passing along his understanding of performance. Dear Basketball became an animated short film with Glen Keane and music by John Williams. In 2018 the film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Bryant thus became a rare figure: an athlete whose second public chapter was not built only on commentating about old victories, but on creative work of his own.

Family and impact

Bryant was married to Vanessa Bryant and was the father of four daughters: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka and Capri. After his NBA career he often spoke about the joy of accompanying his daughters and about the importance of girls' and women's basketball. That later role changed the way many people saw him: beside the relentless competitor stood the father, mentor and storyteller who wanted to pass some of his fire to younger people.

Farewell and legacy

On 26 January 2020, Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Bryant and seven other people died in a helicopter crash in California. Bryant was 41 years old. His numbers 8 and 24 hang above the floor in Los Angeles, his career belongs to the Basketball Hall of Fame, and his name remains connected with an unusual tension: the beauty of the game, the severity of daily work and the question of how far a person can go when talent is never treated as a reason to rest.
