Laura Dahlmeier (born 22 August 1993 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen; died 28 July 2025 on Laila Peak in Pakistan) was a German biathlete and mountaineer. She won two Olympic gold medals and a bronze medal at Pyeongchang 2018 and became a multiple world champion. In 2019 she ended her biathlon career. Afterward she remained connected with sport, but turned more strongly toward mountains, training and new work outside the World Cup.

Early years and biathlon

Dahlmeier grew up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a region where winter sport and mountains are part of everyday life. She came to biathlon early, developed quickly in junior competition and later became part of the German national team. Her style was marked by concentration at the shooting range, endurance on the course and a clear attitude toward strain and recovery. She did not appear to be an athlete seeking publicity at any price, but someone who thought of performance and self-determination together.

World championships and Pyeongchang

In 2017 Dahlmeier became the defining athlete of the World Championships in Hochfilzen. She won several titles and the overall World Cup that season. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the high point of her career followed: gold in the sprint on 10 February, gold in the pursuit on 12 February and bronze in the individual. She thereby became one of the internationally best-known faces of biathlon. Her success rested not on loudness, but on precision, mental calm and consistent preparation.

Early farewell to the World Cup

On 17 May 2019 Dahlmeier announced the end of her career. She was 25 years old. The decision seemed unusual, but matched her attitude: she did not want only to defend titles, but to shape her life herself. Afterward she worked, among other things, as a television expert, remained involved in sport and devoted more time to mountaineering. This second phase was not a retreat from public life, but a shift toward other forms of movement, responsibility and experience of nature.

Mountaineering

After her biathlon career, Dahlmeier was regularly active in the mountains and continued to train in that field. Mountaineering was more than a balance to competition for her; it required planning, risk assessment, trust in a partner and physical precision. This second phase explains her closeness to nature after biathlon without replacing her athletic career.

Laura Dahlmeier died on 28 July 2025 in a mountain accident on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range in Pakistan. She was 31 years old. In her remembrance, exceptional sporting success stands beside a life decision that led away from elite sport early. Her life shows an athlete who took success seriously without letting it determine her completely.
