Leonardo da Vinci (born 15 April 1452 in Anchiano near Vinci; died 2 May 1519 at Clos Lucé near Amboise) was an Italian Renaissance painter, draftsman, engineer, architect, anatomist and natural philosopher. Few historical figures stand so strongly for the connection between art and inquiry. Leonardo observed bodies, water, light, motion, machines and faces with the same patient precision.

Background and training

Leonardo was born out of wedlock, the son of the notary Ser Piero and a woman named Caterina. His early world lay between rural Vinci and culturally dense Florence. In Florence he entered the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio. There he learned not only painting, but drawing, sculpture, metalwork, perspective and technical procedures. This workshop training shaped him more than any narrow idea of art: for Leonardo, eye, hand, material and mechanical thought belonged together.

Milan and The Last Supper

In 1482 Leonardo went to Milan and entered the service of Ludovico Sforza. There he worked as painter, designer of court festivities, engineer and adviser. The Milanese years became one of his most productive periods. With The Virgin of the Rocks and above all The Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie, he created works in which space, gesture, gaze and psychological tension worked together in new ways. The Last Supper shows not a quiet devotional moment, but the instant when news moves through a group and every face responds differently.

Drawing as thinking

Leonardo's notebooks show a mind that did not divide the world into separate compartments. He drew muscles, skulls, embryos, water vortices, flying machines, weapons, mechanisms, city plans and plants. Many projects remained designs, fragments or investigations. That is part of his particular force: drawing was not only preparation for artworks, but a method of research. His mirror writing and dense sketch sheets show a person seeking knowledge through close looking and repeated testing.

Florence, Rome and France

After the fall of Sforza power, Leonardo returned for a time to Florence, worked for Cesare Borgia as a military engineer and cartographer, and later spent time in Rome. Around 1503 he began the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, known as the Mona Lisa. The painting's power does not rest only on the smile, but on soft modeling, the breathing transition between figure and landscape, and a stillness that feels both close and unreachable. In 1516 Leonardo accepted the invitation of Francis I and spent his final years at Clos Lucé in France.

Farewell

Leonardo da Vinci died at Clos Lucé near Amboise on 2 May 1519. He was 67 years old. His reputation does not rest on the number of finished paintings, but on the intensity of his search. In a small body of pictures, thousands of drawings and many pages of notes, he left visible a form of thinking that did not treat art, science and technology as opposites. Leonardo still stands for a Renaissance in which seeing, wonder and questioning became a way of working.
