Maria Schell (born Maria Margarete Anna Schell on 15 January 1926 in Vienna; died 26 April 2005 in Preitenegg, Carinthia) was an Austrian-Swiss actress. In the 1950s she became one of the best-known faces of German-language cinema and later worked in Britain, France, Italy and the United States as well.

Family and flight

Schell was born into an artistic family. Her father Hermann Ferdinand Schell was a Swiss writer, and her mother Margarethe Noé von Nordberg was an actress. After Austria's annexation, the family moved to Switzerland. There Maria Schell began theatre and film work early; in 1942 she first appeared on screen in Steibruch.

Rise in postwar cinema

After the war Schell quickly became a leading actress in German-language cinema. Films such as The Angel with the Trumpet, Dr. Holl and work with O. W. Fischer made her known to a wide audience. Her screen image at the time often centered on feeling, vulnerability and moral conflict. Schell later regarded that image with distance and commented on it pointedly.

International roles

In 1954 Helmut Käutner's The Last Bridge brought international attention. Schell played a German doctor caught in war between fronts and loyalties; at Cannes she received a special mention for the performance. Work followed with directors such as René Clément, Luchino Visconti, Sacha Guitry and Richard Brooks. For Gervaise she was honoured in Venice in 1956, and in Hollywood she appeared in The Brothers Karamazov, The Hanging Tree and Cimarron.

Film, stage and television

In the 1960s and 1970s Schell's work shifted more strongly toward stage, television and selected supporting parts. She appeared in literary adaptations, international productions and German television formats. Alongside major cinema roles, later series and television films also became part of her work. In this way she remained visible to several generations while postwar cinema itself changed.

Later years

Schell was married twice, first to Horst Hächler and later to Veit Relin. She had a son and a daughter. In the 1990s she increasingly withdrew from public life and lived on the family's alpine farm in Carinthia. Her brother Maximilian Schell brought her life back into public view in 2002 with the documentary My Sister Maria.

Farewell

Maria Schell died in Preitenegg on 26 April 2005. She was 79 years old. Her career helped shape European postwar cinema and was marked by popular success, international recognition and later television work.
