Marie Laforêt (born Maïtena Marie Brigitte Douménach on 5 October 1939 in Soulac-sur-Mer; died 2 November 2019 in Genolier, Switzerland) was a French-Swiss actress and singer. She became known in cinema and French-language pop music in the 1960s and 1970s. Her defining work includes the film Plein Soleil and songs such as Les Vendanges de l'amour, Viens, viens, Mon amour, mon ami and Il a neigé sur Yesterday.

From chance to the screen

Laforêt was born on France's Atlantic coast and later moved with her family to Paris. As a teenager she discovered theatre and in 1959 won a Europe 1 talent contest almost by chance. A planned film project with Louis Malle did not materialize, but soon afterward she received her first major screen role: in René Clément's Plein Soleil, released in France in 1960, she played Marge alongside Alain Delon and Maurice Ronet. The film brought her early international attention.

The Fille aux yeux d'or

In 1961 she appeared in La Fille aux yeux d'or by Jean-Gabriel Albicocco, whom she married the same year. The film title became a lasting public image for her because the press and audience often described her appearance through her eyes. What matters is that Laforêt was more than a face of French cinema. She worked with different directors, moved between film, stage and music, and repeatedly avoided simple expectations of stardom.

A singer with her own sound

Her singing career also began close to film. For Saint-Tropez Blues she sang the title song; in 1963 Les Vendanges de l'amour became her first major record success. Her voice was not built on polished virtuosity, but on color, melancholy and distance. She recorded chansons, pop songs and adaptations of international material, including French versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and the Rolling Stones. In doing so she broadened the sound of French pop with folk, chanson and world-music colors.

Between success and withdrawal

Laforêt was successful, but remained skeptical of the music business. She toured, appeared in major Paris venues and sold millions of records, while repeatedly seeking distance from the industry. In 1978 she moved to Geneva and lived in Switzerland for much of the rest of her life. She wrote books, ran an art gallery for a time and later returned to stage and screen. These changes were not a break with art, but part of a career in which she kept redefining her public role.

Cinema, theatre and later years

Alongside early films such as Plein Soleil and La Fille aux yeux d'or, Laforêt appeared in French and Italian productions, including work with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Michel Piccoli, Sophie Marceau and Béatrice Dalle. In later years she also appeared on stage, in roles that called for a mature, self-possessed presence. In 2005 she sang publicly again on tour in France after a long break. The sold-out concerts showed that audiences saw her not only as an image of the 1960s, but as an artist in her own right.

Marie Laforêt died in Genolier, Switzerland, on 2 November 2019. She was 80 years old. Her work connects French cinema, chanson and pop with an attitude that resisted full possession by the public image around her.
