Marika Rökk (born Marie Karoline Rökk on 3 November 1913 in Cairo; died 16 May 2004 in Baden bei Wien) was a German-Austrian dancer, singer and actress of Hungarian descent. She became known through revue, operetta and musical films and was one of the major Ufa stars of the 1930s and 1940s.

Childhood and dance

Rökk was born in Egypt to Hungarian parents and grew up in Budapest. She received dance lessons as a child. In the 1920s the family moved to Paris, where Rökk appeared in revue settings; later she worked on international stages. Her early career was strongly shaped by dance: speed, tap, acrobatics and stage presence became hallmarks of her performances.

Ufa and musical film

In 1934 Rökk was signed by Ufa. Her German film career began with Leichte Kavallerie in 1935. She then appeared in films such as Der Bettelstudent, Gasparone and Hallo Janine, often alongside Johannes Heesters. Ufa used her as an energetic revue star who combined singing, dance and comedy and gave German entertainment cinema an internationally styled format.

Career under National Socialism

Rökk's success belonged to the period of National Socialist film production. Many of her films were musical entertainments, but they were made within a system that directed cinema politically and used stars for gender images, diversion and consent. She also appeared in productions counted as Nazi propaganda. That context belongs to her work and cannot be separated from the artistic technique of the films or from the political function of the film industry at the time.

Postwar work and stage

After 1945 Rökk was temporarily banned from performing; the ban was later lifted. With films such as Fregola, Kind der Donau and Die Csárdásfürstin she reconnected with her audience, although postwar cinema had changed. She also remained present on operetta and revue stages. In later decades she appeared in theatre productions, television shows and occasional films.

Estate and later debates

Rökk was married to director Georg Jacoby and later to Fred Raul; her daughter Gabriele Jacoby also became an actress. After Rökk's death, the Deutsche Kinemathek acquired parts of her estate and presented them in 2005. Later media reports cited declassified intelligence records according to which West German agencies had regarded her as a possible Soviet agent. What she actually knew or passed on remained unclear in those reports.

Farewell

Marika Rökk died in Baden bei Wien on 16 May 2004. She was 90 years old. Her memory is closely tied to German-language musical film and to the continuing assessment of entertainment careers within dictatorial cultural politics.
