Markus Johannes Wolf (born 19 January 1923 in Hechingen; died 9 November 2006 in Berlin) was a German intelligence official, long-serving head of the Main Directorate for Reconnaissance of East Germany's Ministry for State Security, and later an author. In the West he became known as the "man without a face" because for many years few photographs of him were available. Behind that nickname was not an adventure story, but an intelligence service that formed part of the Stasi apparatus.

Exile and formation

Wolf was born to the doctor and writer Friedrich Wolf. The family had Jewish roots, was politically communist and fled Germany after the Nazis came to power. Markus Wolf grew up in Switzerland, France and above all the Soviet Union. There he experienced exile, political training and the war against Germany from a Soviet perspective. These experiences tied him early to communism and to the later GDR.

Building East German foreign intelligence

After 1945 Wolf returned to Berlin. He first worked as a journalist, reported on the Nuremberg trials and then moved into the diplomatic and intelligence structures of East Germany. In the 1950s he rose to the top of the Main Directorate for Reconnaissance, the foreign intelligence branch inside the Ministry for State Security. Under his leadership the HVA became a central intelligence service in the Eastern bloc.

Successes and consequences

Wolf's service placed sources in West German parties, ministries, security agencies and media. The best-known case was Günter Guillaume, who worked in the Federal Chancellery and was exposed as an East German agent on 24 April 1974. The affair contributed to Willy Brandt's resignation. Such operations made Wolf's apparatus known and feared during the Cold War, but they belonged to a system of political control, surveillance and intimidation. Foreign intelligence did not stand outside the Stasi; it was part of it.

Withdrawal and 1989

Wolf left active service in the mid-1980s; on 6 February 1987 his departure was publicly announced. In the autumn of 1989 he appeared at the large demonstration on Berlin's Alexanderplatz and spoke of reform. Many listeners reacted with hostility because his name remained inseparable from the GDR security apparatus. The once invisible official became a public figure, and for many people not a credible reformer.

Trials and books

After German reunification Wolf had to answer in court. In 1993 he was sentenced in Düsseldorf to six years in prison for treason and bribery; that judgment was overturned in 1995 because earlier GDR espionage against West Germany had to be assessed differently in law. In 1997 he received a suspended sentence in another case. In his later books Wolf tried to explain his life, his Jewish background, exile communism and the work of the HVA, without fundamentally breaking with the system.

Farewell

Markus Wolf died in Berlin on 9 November 2006. He was 83 years old. His death fell on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He remains a contradictory figure: shaped by exile, education and communist loyalty, but also one of the most important officials of an intelligence system that watched, steered and damaged people.
