His education included Carleton College, University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point and Lake Forest Academy. His awards include Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, Presidential Medal of Freedom and Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
