Memorial Page for Michael Ballhaus

Michael Ballhaus (born 5 August 1935 in Berlin; died there on 12 April 2017) was a German cinematographer. He worked with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Redford and other directors. His cinematography connected movement, precise lighting and closeness to actors.

Family and first steps

Ballhaus was born as the son of actors Lena Hutter and Oskar Ballhaus. He grew up in a theatre environment and, after school, trained as a photographer. He then worked as a stage photographer and joined Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden. There he learned television cameras, lighting and studio work before turning more strongly toward film.

Fassbinder years

From 1970 to 1978 Ballhaus worked closely with Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Their films together include Whity, Beware of a Holy Whore, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Fontane Effi Briest and The Marriage of Maria Braun. During this period Ballhaus developed a camera style that opened spaces through movement while also attending to faces, looks and the tension between characters.

United States and Martin Scorsese

In 1982 Ballhaus moved to the United States. There he worked with John Sayles, Volker Schlöndorff and Mike Nichols, but especially with Martin Scorsese. Their films together include After Hours, The Color of Money, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence, Gangs of New York and The Departed. In Hollywood, Ballhaus brought experience from European auteur cinema without imposing it as a rigid signature.

Camera as movement

Ballhaus was often associated with circling camera movements, but his work was not built on a single effect. In Goodfellas the camera follows through rooms and social situations; in The Age of Innocence it orders looks, distance and social rules; in The Marriage of Maria Braun it connects postwar atmosphere and personal tension. Ballhaus sought images that made a scene readable while keeping movement within it.

Recognition and teaching

Ballhaus received three Academy Award nominations, for Broadcast News, The Fabulous Baker Boys and Gangs of New York. He was a member of the Akademie der Künste and taught in Berlin and Hamburg, among other places. In 2016 the Berlinale awarded him the Honorary Golden Bear. The honour recognised long work between German television, New German Cinema and US film.

Farewell

Michael Ballhaus died in Berlin during the night of 11 to 12 April 2017. He was 81 years old. His career shows how cinematography can shape narrative rhythm, closeness, spatial feeling and acting without placing itself in front of the characters.
