Nadja Tiller (born 16 March 1929 in Vienna; died 21 February 2023 in Hamburg) was an Austrian actress. She worked in film, television and theatre and became one of the defining faces of German-language postwar cinema in the 1950s and 1960s.

Vienna and training

Tiller was born to actor Anton Tiller and singer and actress Erika Körner. She grew up in an artistic environment and trained in Vienna, including at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and the Academy of Music and Performing Arts. In 1949 she joined the ensemble of Theater in der Josefstadt. In the same year she won the Miss Austria title; for her later work, however, the decisive point was how precisely she could control beauty, distance and observation on stage and in front of the camera.

Film career

In the 1950s Tiller quickly became a busy actress. She appeared in entertainment films, dramas and literary adaptations and worked with directors including Rolf Thiele. Her roles often showed women moving within narrow social images while quietly undermining them. Tiller could appear elegant, cool, vulnerable and ironic without reducing her characters to surface.

The Girl Rosemarie

The turning point in her career was Das Mädchen Rosemarie in 1958. The film drew on the story of Rosemarie Nitribitt and connected it with a satirical view of the economic miracle, power and social façade. Tiller played the title role not as a flat projection surface, but as a woman seeking recognition while being used by the interests of others. The film premiered in Venice on 25 August 1958; afterward international roles opened for Tiller as well.

International roles and television

After Das Mädchen Rosemarie, Tiller also worked in international productions. She appeared alongside Jean Gabin, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Robert Mitchum while remaining present in German-language film and television. Later she moved naturally between cinema, television roles, stage work and readings. That breadth made her career last longer than many postwar role images.

Walter Giller and later years

In 1956 Nadja Tiller married actor Walter Giller. The two also appeared together over decades and became part of German film and television history as a couple. In 2008 they moved into a retirement residence in Hamburg; Giller died in 2011. Tiller remained publicly visible, supported Plan International for many years and sponsored children in several countries.

Nadja Tiller died in Hamburg on 21 February 2023. She was 93 years old. Her work remains connected with a cinema that showed female figures between glamour, social control and their own stance. Her best-known role therefore still resonates: not as nostalgia for the economic miracle, but as a sharp observation of a society that sorts people by usefulness and status.
