Nelson Mandela (born 18 July 1918 in Mvezo; died 5 December 2013 in Johannesburg) was a South African anti-apartheid activist, lawyer, political prisoner and statesman. He became the central figure in the struggle against apartheid and, from 1994 to 1999, was South Africa's first democratically elected president. His life stands for resistance, imprisonment, negotiation, reconciliation and the difficult work of turning an unjust state into a democratic order.

Background and education

Mandela was born Rolihlahla Mandela in Mvezo and grew up within Thembu society in eastern South Africa. He received the English name Nelson at school. He studied at the University College of Fort Hare and later in Johannesburg, where his political and professional life took shape. In the city he encountered the systematic dispossession of Black South Africans not as an abstraction, but as everyday reality: housing, work, movement and political rights were controlled by racist laws.

ANC, law and resistance

In 1944 Mandela joined the African National Congress and helped found the ANC Youth League. With Oliver Tambo he opened a law practice in Johannesburg that gave many Black clients access to legal assistance. In the 1950s Mandela became known through campaigns of civil disobedience. At the same time, repression by the apartheid state increased. After bans, arrests and growing violence, Mandela became one of the founders of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the ANC's armed wing, in 1961. This matters for any honest account: Mandela was not only a symbol of reconciliation, but also a political actor inside an escalating system of oppression.

Rivonia Trial and prison

In 1964 Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. His statement from the dock made clear that he stood for a democratic society without racial domination. He then spent many years on Robben Island, followed by Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. Imprisonment was meant to remove him from politics; instead his name became a global sign against apartheid. Yet the long imprisonment should not be romanticized. It meant separation from family, harsh conditions, illness, loss and years in which political action was possible only under extreme restriction.

Release and negotiations

Mandela was released on 11 February 1990 after 27 years in prison. His return to public life came during a dangerous transition: old power structures, political violence, mistrust and expectation stood close together. Mandela negotiated with President Frederik Willem de Klerk over the end of apartheid and the path to universal elections. In 1993 they jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize. Their cooperation was not a simple handshake between friends, but a political process marked by conflict, pressure and the recognition that without negotiation South Africa could have fallen into even greater violence.

President and democratic reconstruction

On 10 May 1994 Mandela was inaugurated as president. His presidency emphasized national reconciliation, democratic institutions and South Africa's return to international life. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission became a central attempt to publicly name the crimes of apartheid without pushing the country toward revenge. At the same time, apartheid's social consequences remained enormous: poverty, land questions, inequality, violence and unequal access to education and work could not be solved in one term. Mandela did not stand again in 1999 and handed the office to Thabo Mbeki.

Later years and farewell

After his presidency, Mandela remained a moral authority worldwide, while gradually withdrawing from public life with age. He continued to work for peace, education and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Nelson Mandela died in Johannesburg on 5 December 2013. He was 95 years old. His name is often linked with forgiveness, but his stature does not rest on a simple saintly story. It rests on the way he connected political action, personal discipline and a willingness to negotiate in a situation where revenge, fear and civil war would have been easy paths.
