Biography
Sonja Ziemann (born 8 February 1926 in Eichwalde near Berlin; died 17 February 2020 in Munich) was a German actress, dancer and singer. With The Black Forest Girl and The Heath Is Green she became a visible face of West German postwar cinema in the early 1950s.
Dance and early stage work
Ziemann began her artistic career with dance training, including lessons with Tatjana Gsovsky. As a teenager she appeared in ballet, operetta and revue. During and after the Second World War she worked on Berlin stages. This early formation through dance and music remained visible in many of her film roles, especially in operetta and musical films.
Public success in Heimatfilm
The large public success came in 1950 with Hans Deppe's The Black Forest Girl, in which Ziemann appeared alongside Rudolf Prack. One year later came The Heath Is Green, again with Prack. These films offered many viewers after war and loss an ordered, colourful counterworld. Ziemann's public image became strongly tied to Heimatfilm, friendliness and postwar longing.
Changing roles
Ziemann later tried to broaden this typecasting. She appeared in dramas, international productions and on stage, including My Fair Lady and plays by Tennessee Williams and Frank Wedekind. Films such as Dogs, Do You Want to Live Forever and The Bridge at Remagen showed another side of her repertoire than the early commercial successes.
Public image
Ziemann's public perception remained shaped by the 1950s for a long time. That helped her career, but it also became a limitation because later work was often read against the image of cheerful postwar cinema. The tension of her career lies there: she was part of a popular cinema that promised consolation and at the same time looked for roles that allowed more fracture.
Farewell
Sonja Ziemann died in Munich on 17 February 2020. She was 94 years old. Her work remains connected with West German film of the 1950s but extends beyond the narrow label of Heimatfilm.
