Theodore Bikel (born 2 May 1924 in Vienna; died 21 July 2015 in Los Angeles) was an Austrian-American actor, singer, musician and political activist. He was visible on stage, in film and on the concert platform, and remained especially connected with Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music and Jewish folk music.

Vienna, Palestine and London

Bikel was born in Vienna into a Jewish family. After the Anschluss, the family fled to Palestine. There he began acting and took the name Theodore after Theodor Herzl. He later went to London, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and worked in theatre. These early stations shaped his sense of self: language, exile, music and political awareness belonged together for him.

Stage and film

On Broadway and in the West End, Bikel played a wide repertoire. In the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music, he created the role of Captain Georg von Trapp. In film he became known in part through The Defiant Ones, which brought him an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor. Other roles led him into war films, literary adaptations, television series and guest appearances.

Tevye and Fiddler on the Roof

A special connection developed with Fiddler on the Roof. Bikel played Tevye for decades in more than two thousand performances. The role suited his voice, humor and experience with Jewish history. He did not treat Tevye as a folklore figure, but as a person carrying tradition, family, poverty, loss and change.

Folk music and activism

Bikel recorded many albums and sang in numerous languages, including Yiddish, Hebrew, German, Russian and English. He was among the founders of the Newport Folk Festival and connected music with political work. He supported civil rights, Jewish organisations, Soviet Jews, peace issues and the rights of performing artists. Later he served as president of Actors' Equity.

Farewell

Theodore Bikel died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on 21 July 2015. He was 91 years old. His life's work connects exile, stage, film, music and public engagement. He was not an artist of one role, but a storyteller with many languages and an enduring sense of responsibility.
