Memorial Page for Ursula Donath

Ursula "Ulla" Donath (born 30 July 1931 in Saldus, Latvia; died 12 April 2026 in Halle (Saale)), born Ursula Jurewitz and later also known as Ursula Brehme, was a German athlete. She ran mainly the 400 and 800 metres, competed within East German athletics and won bronze over 800 metres for the United Team of Germany at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

From Saldus to Luckenwalde and Halle

Donath was born in Saldus, formerly Frauenburg. Her family was resettled to Poznań in 1941; after the Second World War Ursula Jurewitz grew up in Luckenwalde. She entered elite sport in East Germany and later became closely connected with Halle: she represented SC Chemie Halle-Leuna and remained associated with the city after her competitive career.

400 metres, 800 metres and cross-country

During the 1950s Donath ran at the top level of East German middle-distance athletics. In 1953 she set an IAAF-recognised world record over 400 metres and later improved that mark. She also won national titles in cross-country and over 800 metres. At international student sport events she won medals over 400 metres, 800 metres and in relays.

Rome 1960

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Donath ran the 800 metres for the United Team of Germany. The distance had returned to the women's Olympic programme after a long absence. Donath won her heat on 6 September in 2:07.8. One day later she ran 2:05.6 in the final and finished third behind Lyudmila Lysenko and Brenda Jones. That result gave her the bronze medal.

Work and later years

After her competitive years, Donath worked as a sports teacher at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. From 1961 to 1966 she also worked as a sports administrator and DVfL member. For Halle, her 1960 bronze medal was an early Olympic success for the city. Ursula Donath died in Halle (Saale) on 12 April 2026. She was 94 years old.
