Memorial Page for Uwe Seeler

Uwe Seeler (born 5 November 1936 in Hamburg; died 21 July 2022 in Norderstedt) was a German footballer and later football official. He shaped Hamburger SV for decades, played 72 matches for the West German national team and was made an honorary captain of the DFB team in 1972. In Hamburg he became known as “Uns Uwe” because sporting achievement, modesty and loyalty to one club were closely connected in his public image.

Hamburg and HSV

Seeler grew up in Hamburg and joined Hamburger SV early. His father, Erwin Seeler, had also been a footballer, and Uwe Seeler became closely tied to the club while still young. From the 1950s onward he became the centre of HSV's attack. He stayed with the club even when offers from abroad came. That decision contributed much to his reputation: Seeler was not only a successful striker, but a player who stood for a club, a city and a particular kind of reliability.

Goals and titles

As a player, Seeler was known above all for his exceptional finishing. For HSV he scored more than 500 goals in competitive matches; in league play he scored 404 goals in 476 games. In 1960 he became German champion with HSV, and in 1963 he won the DFB Cup. In the first Bundesliga season, 1963/64, he was the league's top scorer. Seeler was not physically large, but he was strong in the air, mobile, robust and often exactly where a chance appeared.

National team

For West Germany, Seeler played in four World Cups: 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970. He scored 43 goals in 72 international matches and often led the team as captain. The 1966 World Cup final at Wembley remained the most painful moment of his national-team career; in 1970 Germany finished third after the semi-final against Italy. Seeler never became a world champion, but his conduct in defeat became part of the image many people kept of him.

Farewell and reputation

On 1 May 1972 Seeler was honoured with a farewell match in Hamburg. In the same year, the DFB named him the second honorary captain of the national team after Fritz Walter. After his playing career he remained connected with football and HSV, even though later periods as an official were not free of problems. His public standing rested less on a flawless post-playing career than on the connection of sporting greatness, approachability and credible loyalty.

Farewell

Uwe Seeler died in Norderstedt on 21 July 2022. Hamburg and HSV honoured him with a public memorial service at the Volksparkstadion. His memory is connected not only with goals, titles and international matches, but also with the rare role of a footballer who was respected across club loyalties.
