He was married to Mary Maxwell Gates and Mimi Gardner Gates. His education included University of Washington School of Law, University of Michigan and Bremerton High School. He was awarded the Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College. His cause of death was Alzheimer's disease. He was buried at Riverside National Cemetery.
