Wolfgang Becker (born 22 June 1954 in Hemer; died 12 December 2024 in Berlin) was a German film director and screenwriter. He became internationally known through Good Bye, Lenin!, a tragicomedy about family, memory, political upheaval and the post-reunification years.

Training and early films

Becker studied German literature, history and American studies at Freie Universität Berlin and then moved to the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. His graduation film Schmetterlinge won international recognition, including a Student Academy Award. Already in his early work Becker connected precise observation with a sense of timing, comedy and quiet melancholy.

X Filme and Life Is All You Get

In 1994 Becker founded X Filme Creative Pool together with Tom Tykwer, Dani Levy and Stefan Arndt. That environment helped shape German auteur cinema of the 1990s. With Das Leben ist eine Baustelle in 1997, Becker told a Berlin contemporary story in which private uncertainty, illness, love and urban everyday life stand side by side.

Good Bye, Lenin!

In 2003 Good Bye, Lenin! was released in cinemas. The film tells of Alex, who tries to hide the collapse of East Germany from his mother after she wakes from a coma. Becker developed the material into a play with images, care, self-deception and political memory. The film reached a large audience, was shown in many countries and received the European Film Award for best film.

Becker's films are interested in people dealing with fragile versions of life. In Good Bye, Lenin!, history lives on in apartments, family conversations, news images and everyday objects. The humor remains closely tied to loss. This mixture made Becker's cinema accessible while preserving the dignity of its characters.

Later work and death

After Good Bye, Lenin!, Becker continued to work for cinema and television, but remained present through only a few projects. He died in Berlin on 12 December 2024 after a serious illness. He was 70 years old. His memory remains connected with a cinema that tells political upheaval through intimacy, family images and precise details of everyday life.
