When Vladimir Menshov's film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the director heard the news on television on 1 April — and assumed it was an April Fools' joke. Soviet authorities never let him travel to Hollywood for the ceremony. He did not hold his statuette in his hands until 1989.
