Memorial Page for Christa Wolf (née Christa Ihlenfeld)

Christa Wolf (born 18 March 1929 in Landsberg an der Warthe, now Gorzów Wielkopolski; died 1 December 2011 in Berlin) was a German novelist, essayist and screenwriter. She was one of the most important literary voices of East Germany. Her books connected personal memory, social experience and political self-questioning, especially in Divided Heaven, The Quest for Christa T., Patterns of Childhood and Cassandra.

Childhood, flight and study

Christa Wolf was born Christa Ihlenfeld in Landsberg an der Warthe. Toward the end of the Second World War her family fled to Mecklenburg. Wolf studied German literature in Jena and Leipzig, married the writer Gerhard Wolf and first worked as an editor and literary employee in East Germany. This closeness to GDR institutions was part of her biography, as was her later distance from state control over culture.

Literature in East Germany

With Divided Heaven Wolf became widely known in 1963. The text tells a love story against the background of German division and the early GDR. In The Quest for Christa T. she moved further away from simple patterns of socialist realism and placed memory, doubt and subjective perception at the center. Her books were widely read in East Germany and the West, but they repeatedly stood between recognition, censorship and political expectation.

Dissent and Stasi debate

In 1976 Wolf was among the writers who protested against the expatriation of Wolf Biermann. This increased her distance from the GDR cultural apparatus. After 1990 it also became public that Wolf had been listed for a short time as an informal collaborator of the State Security service in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Later she herself was monitored by the Stasi for decades. Wolf published her files and faced the debate, which reexamined both her work and her political role.

Cassandra, Accident and late books

With Cassandra Wolf connected ancient material with questions of war, power, female voice and historical blindness. Accident responded to the experience of Chernobyl and to private fear. In 1980 she received the Georg Büchner Prize, and in 1987 the Geschwister Scholl Prize. Even after German reunification, Wolf continued to write about memory, guilt, self-examination and the breaks of the twentieth century.

Farewell

Christa Wolf died in Berlin on 1 December 2011. Her biography cannot be reduced to either adaptation or resistance. It shows a writer who lived in the GDR, believed in its possibilities, suffered from its limits and repeatedly worked through her own contradictions in literature.
