Claudio Abbado (born 26 June 1933 in Milan; died 20 January 2014 in Bologna) was an Italian conductor. He shaped La Scala in Milan, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Abbado represented a conducting art that connected the great symphonic tradition, opera, contemporary music and work with young orchestras.

Musical background

Abbado was born into a musical family. His father Michelangelo Abbado was a violinist and teacher, and his brother Marcello became a pianist and composer. Claudio Abbado studied at the conservatory in Milan and later in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky. Early on he learned to understand music not only as sound, but as shared work among score, musicians, space and audience.

La Scala and opera

At La Scala in Milan, Abbado became a defining force in the 1960s. Between 1966 and 1986 he rose there to the position of music director. He opened the house more strongly to new programming, contemporary music and a wider audience. In opera he combined precision with dramatic flexibility. Works by Verdi, Rossini, Mussorgsky, Berg and other composers became especially important to him, interpreted from historical knowledge and present curiosity.

London, Vienna and Berlin

Abbado led the London Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1988 and became music director of the Vienna State Opera in 1986. On 8 October 1989 the Berlin Philharmonic elected him to succeed Herbert von Karajan. In Berlin he led the orchestra through a period of cultural change after the fall of the Wall. His work was seen less as authoritarian control from outside than as a search for transparent, chamber-like interplay within a large orchestra.

Young orchestras and Lucerne

Abbado was deeply committed to young musicians. He was connected with the European Union Youth Orchestra and founded or shaped ensembles such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and later the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. In Lucerne, after serious illness, a late center of his work emerged. There he gathered musicians with whom he developed Mahler, Beethoven and contemporary programs in a highly concentrated way.

Farewell

Claudio Abbado died in Bologna on 20 January 2014. His biography stands for a quiet but far-reaching form of musical authority. He did not lead orchestras through gesture or power alone, but through listening, trust and shared work on sound.
