Elvis Presley (born 8 January 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi; died 16 August 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee) was an American singer, musician and actor. He was often called the King of Rock and Roll, but that phrase explains only part of him. Presley connected country, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues and pop into a stage figure that changed American popular culture in the mid-1950s. He did not invent rock and roll, but he became its most visible and commercially powerful figure.

Tupelo, Memphis and Sun Records

Presley grew up in modest circumstances. In 1948 his family moved to Memphis, where church music, radio country, Beale Street blues and African American rhythm and blues all entered his listening world. At Sun Records in 1954 he recorded That's All Right with Scotty Moore and Bill Black. The recording sounded new because it made musical boundaries move. At the same time, many of the styles from which Presley benefited came from Black musical traditions. His success made that energy visible to a white mass audience, while the original sources often received less recognition.

1956 and the shock of television

In late 1955 Presley moved to RCA Victor, and Colonel Tom Parker became the central figure in his management. In 1956 came Heartbreak Hotel, national television appearances, his debut album and the film Love Me Tender. Presley's voice was soft and rough at once, his body on stage controlled and provocative. To young viewers it was electrifying; to many adults it felt threatening. The argument over his appearances shows how strongly music, sexuality, racial boundaries, youth culture and television intersected at the time.

Film, Army and controlled image

Jailhouse Rock and King Creole showed that Presley could do more than sell records. Yet his film career was soon shaped by reliable formulas: musical numbers, light plots, exotic settings and safe returns. In 1958 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and later served in Germany. Military service interrupted the first rock and roll phase and also helped calm his public image. After his return he remained successful, but management increasingly favored films and soundtracks over musical risk.

Family, gospel and comeback

In 1967 Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu, and in 1968 their daughter Lisa Marie was born. Gospel remained central to him musically; his Grammy Awards came not for the rock hits, but for gospel recordings. The NBC Comeback Special of 1968 showed him more direct, agile and musically alert than many of his films. Soon afterward he recorded songs such as Suspicious Minds in Memphis and returned to the stage in Las Vegas in 1969. This period proved that Presley was not only a memory of 1956.

Parker, Las Vegas and late pressure

Colonel Tom Parker organized Presley's career with great business skill, but also with narrow limits. International tours did not happen, and film and stage decisions were often shaped more by income than by artistic development. From 1969 onward, Presley became a hugely successful live act in Las Vegas. At the same time, dependencies grew: long engagements, touring routines, health problems, medication and an increasingly difficult public image. The later years should not be told only as decline; they also included powerful concerts, but under growing physical and psychological pressure.

Farewell

Elvis Presley died at Graceland in Memphis on 16 August 1977. He was 42 years old. His health had been severely strained in his final years; heart failure was identified as the cause of death, and problematic use of prescription medication was part of the wider picture. His afterlife is enormous: Graceland, films, impersonators, archive releases and fan culture. What remains central is the music: a voice and stage presence that gathered existing American musical currents and permanently changed pop, television, youth culture and celebrity.
