Biography
Fons Rademakers (born 5 September 1920 in Roosendaal; died 22 February 2007 in Geneva), born Alphonse Marie Rademakers, was a Dutch film director, producer, screenwriter and actor. His films brought Dutch literature, wartime experience, memory and social conflict to the screen.
Theatre, film and directing
Rademakers began as an actor and worked with theatre and film directors in the Netherlands, France and Italy. That training shaped his later films: they relied on narrative structure, careful direction of characters and a clear closeness to literary sources. His directing debut, Dorp aan de rivier, appeared in 1958 and received an Academy Award nomination for foreign-language film.
Dutch material
Over the following decades Rademakers repeatedly adapted Dutch novels and stories. Makkers staakt uw wild geraas won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1961. Max Havelaar from 1976 addressed colonial exploitation in the Dutch East Indies. Other films also dealt with guilt, adaptation, memory and the consequences of political violence.
The Assault
His best-known film became De aanslag, internationally The Assault. The adaptation of Harry Mulisch's novel tells of an act of violence during the German occupation of the Netherlands and its consequences over several decades. On 30 March 1987 The Assault won the Academy Award for foreign-language film. It was the first Dutch feature film to receive that award.
Working method
Rademakers often worked with existing literary material. From that came a cinema of carefully constructed stories. His films place personal memory beside political history: families, village communities, wartime experience and colonial relations shape decisions and lives.
Geneva
Fons Rademakers died in Geneva on 22 February 2007. He was 86 years old. His work remains connected with Dutch postwar cinema, literary adaptations and the international success of The Assault.
