Helmut Dietl (born 22 June 1944 in Bad Wiessee; died 30 March 2015 in Munich) was a German director, screenwriter and producer. His work looks at Munich, media, social ascent, self-deception and public performance. Series such as Münchner Geschichten, Monaco Franze and Kir Royal, and films such as Schtonk! and Rossini, gave his work a clear profile within German film and television.

Munich and early work

Dietl grew up in Munich. After school and military service, he began studying theatre studies and art history, but left before completing the degree. He gained practical experience as a production manager and assistant director at the Munich Kammerspiele. Early on he wrote screenplays and worked for television. In 1974 Münchner Geschichten became his debut as writer and director.

Television with a Munich eye

With Der ganz normale Wahnsinn, Monaco Franze - Der ewige Stenz and Kir Royal, Dietl developed a tone that connected comedy, melancholy and observation of social settings. His characters move through apartments, restaurants, editorial offices and social circles where origin, status and self-image are constantly negotiated. His work with Helmut Fischer, Franz Xaver Kroetz and Patrick Süskind shaped this period.

Cinema: Schtonk!, Rossini and later films

In 1992 Schtonk! reached cinemas, a satire on the forged Hitler diaries affair. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for foreign-language film and brought Dietl's precise handling of media rituals to an international audience. In 1997 he followed with Rossini - oder die mörderische Frage, wer mit wem schlief, a film about Munich's film and social scene. Later Dietl directed Late Show, Vom Suchen und Finden der Liebe and Zettl.

Film academy, awards and later years

Dietl received several awards, including the Bavarian Film Award and the German Film Award for lifetime achievement. In 2003 he was one of the initiators of the Deutsche Filmakademie together with Bernd Eichinger and Uli Felsberg. His later work also kept its focus on media, urban society and public roles. In 2013 Dietl made his lung cancer diagnosis public.

Farewell

Helmut Dietl died in Munich on 30 March 2015, surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old. His work remains closely connected with Munich and also follows a wider theme: how people narrate themselves, how society stages itself and how comedy can arise from exact observation.
