Memorial Page for Hermann Zapf

Hermann Zapf (born 8 November 1918 in Nuremberg; died 4 June 2015 in Darmstadt) was a German type designer, calligrapher, book designer and teacher. His typefaces include Palatino, Optima, Zapf Chancery, Zapf Dingbats and Zapfino. Many people encounter his work every day, often without knowing his name.

Handwriting and training

Zapf discovered calligraphy during his training as a retoucher. He worked with pen, brush and later the tools of type design. The Second World War interrupted his early career; after work connected with lettering and cartography, he continued his practice in Frankfurt and later in Darmstadt. From handwritten forms he developed typefaces that could be used for composition, book pages and technical systems.

Palatino and Optima

Palatino was created in the late 1940s and named after the Italian writing master Giambattista Palatino. The typeface joined Renaissance references with the demands of modern printing. Optima appeared in 1958 with its own profile: it behaves like a sans serif, yet its stroke endings have subtle swelling. That allowed it to work in inscriptions, books, posters and later digital environments.

From metal type to computers

Zapf's working life reached from metal type through phototypesetting to digital fonts. He worked with Stempel and Linotype, advised companies in the United States and taught at Rochester Institute of Technology. He was interested in how letterforms could remain readable and alive under new technical conditions. That approach also led him to mathematical and digital projects such as AMS Euler and Zapfino.

Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse

In 1951 Zapf married the calligrapher and type designer Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse. Both worked in related fields and shaped postwar lettering culture in different ways. Around them, craft, book art, teaching and international contacts came together. Their marriage lasted until Hermann Zapf's death.

Darmstadt

Hermann Zapf died in Darmstadt on 4 June 2015. He was 96 years old. His work shows how closely lettering is connected with reading, technology and daily life: Palatino appears in books, Optima on inscriptions and Zapfino in digital systems. From individual letterforms came a body of work that is still in use today.
