Hilde Holger (born Hilde Sofer on 18 October 1905 in Vienna; died 22 September 2001 in London) was an Austrian-British dancer, choreographer and dance teacher. She belonged to the tradition of Central European expressionist dance, worked in exile in India and later shaped generations of dancers in London.

Vienna and expressionist dance

Holger grew up in a Jewish family in Vienna. As a young woman she studied with Gertrud Bodenwieser, an important figure in modern expressionist dance. In the 1920s Holger emerged as a dancer and founded her own school in Vienna. Her teaching aimed at expression, body awareness and artistic independence rather than simple imitation of set forms.

Persecution and exile

After Austria's annexation in 1938, Holger was pushed out of public cultural life as a Jewish artist. In 1939 she was able to emigrate to Bombay. There she opened another dance school and worked with people of different origins, religions and social backgrounds. India became both a refuge and an artistic space in which she tested movement, gesture and teaching anew.

London

After the war Holger moved to London. In Camden she built a school for contemporary dance and taught for decades. Her work was less about quick public fame than about long-term transmission. Students described a teacher with high standards who took individual expression seriously while also demanding discipline.

Integrated dance

Holger's openness to people with disabilities and learning difficulties became especially important. She accepted them into her work when they wanted to dance seriously and supported a development that later became significant in integrated dance. One of her students, Wolfgang Stange, carried this approach forward with the Amici Dance Theatre Company.

Legacy

Holger's path led from Vienna through Bombay to London and connected several cultural spaces. Her work therefore cannot be reduced to a single national dance history. It stands for exile, transmission and a pedagogy that understood the body as a bearer of experience, memory and self-determination. Her work remained present after her death through archives, documentaries and generations of students.

Hilde Holger died in London on 22 September 2001. She was 95 years old. Her memory is linked with expressionist dance, Jewish-Austrian exile and a dance pedagogy that brought together artistic precision and openness to others.
