Ingmar Bergman (born 14 July 1918 in Uppsala; died 30 July 2007 on Fårö) was a Swedish film and theatre director, screenwriter and author. He was one of the most influential European filmmakers of the twentieth century. Films such as The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander turned inner conflict, religious doubt, family violence and the closeness of theatre and life into subjects of world cinema.

Childhood, theatre and early films

Bergman grew up in a strict Protestant parsonage. Experiences of guilt, punishment, ritual and silence shaped many of his later subjects, although his films should not be read only as disguised childhood reports. In Stockholm he studied, worked with student theatres and soon entered professional theatre. The screenplay for Torment made him visible in Swedish film in 1944; in 1946 Crisis became his first feature as director.

International breakthrough

With Smiles of a Summer Night, Bergman gained international attention in the mid-1950s. In 1957 two films shaped his worldwide image. The Seventh Seal placed a knight, death and the question of God in a stark medieval landscape. Wild Strawberries told a story of ageing, memory and missed closeness. Both films showed how Bergman staged philosophical themes not as lectures, but as situations, faces and spaces.

Ensemble, camera and Fårö

Bergman repeatedly worked with actors including Max von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Erland Josephson and Liv Ullmann. With cinematographer Sven Nykvist he found a visual language in which faces, light and silence could feel almost physical. The island of Fårö became his home, retreat and cinematic space. There he made works in which a small number of people, closed rooms and a landscape of rock, sea and wind carried inner conflict.

Persona and radical form

Persona from 1966 is one of Bergman's boldest films. An actress falls silent, a nurse speaks, and the borders between role, body, language and image begin to collapse. The film shows Bergman's interest in identity, shame and projection in a form that also makes cinema itself visible. In the following years he joined psychological closeness with severe experimentation: Shame, Hour of the Wolf, The Passion of Anna and later Cries and Whispers extended this dark, concentrated phase.

Crisis, late work and television

In 1976 tax investigations in Sweden struck Bergman deeply. He left the country for a time and worked in Germany, among other places. The case was later largely resolved in his favour, but it left a lasting wound. Artistically he remained productive. Autumn Sonata brought Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann together in a painful mother-daughter drama. With Fanny and Alexander in 1982 he created a late major work that joined theatre, family, fantasy and authoritarian narrowness in a large narrative form.

Farewell

Ingmar Bergman died on Fårö on 30 July 2007. He was 89 years old. His work matters not because it gives simple answers about faith, love or guilt, but because it asks those questions with unusual precision. Bergman's films show people in moments when language fails, closeness becomes dangerous and images reveal more than explanations.
