Memorial Page for Judith Kerr

Judith Kerr (born 14 June 1923 in Berlin; died 22 May 2019 in London) was a German-born British writer and illustrator. She created picture books such as The Tiger Who Came to Tea and the Mog series, and in When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit told a story of flight and exile from a child's perspective.

Berlin and flight

Kerr was born Anna Judith Gertrud Helene Kerr into a Jewish family. Her father Alfred Kerr was a theatre critic and public opponent of the Nazis, and her mother Julia Kerr was a composer. In 1933 the family fled Germany, first to Switzerland, then to France and finally to Britain. Judith Kerr was a child at the time; later she found a language in which loss, fear, adaptation and everyday life could stand next to one another.

Arrival in England

In Britain Kerr learned English, went to school and later studied at the Central School of Art. During the war she worked for a time with the Red Cross. After 1945 she returned to artistic training and later also worked around the BBC. In 1954 she married screenwriter Nigel Kneale. Family life with their children eventually led her toward her own books.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

The Tiger Who Came to Tea appeared in 1968. The story of Sophie, her mother and the polite tiger who arrives for tea and eats the household empty became one of Britain's enduring picture books. Kerr insisted that the tiger was not a coded symbol. That lightness is part of the book's effect: the impossible enters an ordinary kitchen, creates disorder and disappears again.

Mog and writing for children

With Mog the Forgetful Cat, Kerr began another long-running series. Mog was not a perfect picture-book cat, but forgetful, vulnerable, stubborn and close to family life. Kerr's drawings use clear lines, warm rooms and precise comedy. Her books take children seriously without becoming heavy: they allow fear, mishap, comfort and joy in simple scenes.

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit appeared in 1971. In it Kerr transformed her own flight from Germany into literature for young readers. The book does not explain persecution abstractly, but follows a child who loses languages, homes, schools and certainties while continuing to observe, ask questions and live. In 1974 it received the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis.

Farewell

Judith Kerr died at her home in London on 22 May 2019 after a short illness. She was 95 years old. Her work connects the experience of exile with a rare calmness of storytelling: clear images, precise sentences and stories in which children do not fully understand the world, but act seriously within it.
