She was married to Moss Hart. Her education included University of Paris, London School of Economics and Political Science and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She received 4 awards, including National Medal of Arts, Distinguished Service to the Visual Arts Award. Her cause of death was heart failure. She was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery.
