Marilyn Monroe (born 1 June 1926 in Los Angeles as Norma Jeane Mortenson; died 5 August 1962 in Los Angeles) was an American actress, singer and model. She became one of the most recognizable faces of Hollywood in the 1950s. Her fame did not rest on beauty or publicity alone: Monroe developed a precise screen persona, connecting comedy, vulnerability, voice and timing, and later fought for greater control over her work.

Norma Jeane and the way to film

Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles and was later also known as Norma Jeane Baker. Her childhood was shaped by foster homes, changing households and unstable family circumstances. During the Second World War she worked in a factory, was photographed there and found a route into the entertainment industry through modeling. In 1946 she signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox and took the name Marilyn Monroe. Norma Jeane did not simply disappear into a stage name; she became the basis of a carefully shaped public image.

Early roles and breakthrough

After small film roles, Monroe became more visible in 1950 through appearances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve. In 1953 came Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. These films made her known around the world, but they also show how precisely she worked with rhythm and attention. In comedy she often played a character who was underestimated and, through that very underestimation, controlled the scene. Her image was commercially shaped, but her impact came from craft and discipline.

Fame, comedy and public control

With Jane Russell, Monroe was honored in 1953 outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The moment suited a career that was no longer unfolding only on screen, but also on covers, in fan magazines and in an increasingly severe public sphere. Her marriages to Joe DiMaggio and later Arthur Miller were commented on worldwide. This attention gave her power and made her vulnerable at the same time: studio contracts, media images and private crises overlapped. Monroe did not want to remain fixed in the role of the naive blonde. In New York she studied at the Actors Studio and worked with Lee Strasberg. Her new contract with Fox gave her more say over projects, directors and cinematographers. Bus Stop showed a more serious, concentrated Monroe in 1956; The Prince and the Showgirl became an independent production with Laurence Olivier.

Some Like It Hot and the later years

Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot was released in 1959. As Sugar Kane, Monroe connected lightness, melancholy and musical timing with such precision that the role remains one of the great performances in film comedy. In 1960 she received the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical. The Misfits, written by Arthur Miller, followed with a visibly different, more serious energy. In these years Monroe suffered from health problems and from working conditions intensified by fame, expectations and distrust.

Farewell

On 5 August 1962 Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her home in Los Angeles. Authorities attributed her death to barbiturate poisoning and classified it as a probable suicide. She was 36 years old. Her afterlife has often been overlaid with myths, projections and speculation. What remains first is the artist: an actress who shaped an apparently light screen figure with great precision, pushed against the limits of the studio system and permanently changed the image of the Hollywood star.
