Biography
Michael Verhoeven (born 13 July 1938 in Berlin; died 22 April 2024 in Grünwald near Munich) was a German director, screenwriter, producer, actor and physician. His films connected narrative cinema with political investigation, especially where National Socialism, repression, responsibility and post-war silence were at stake.
Family, stage and medicine
Verhoeven was born into an acting family. His father Paul Verhoeven was an actor and director; his mother Doris Kiesow was an actress. Michael Verhoeven appeared on stage as a child and acted in films such as Das fliegende Klassenzimmer. At the same time, he studied medicine and completed a doctorate in 1969. Alongside his film background, this gave him a precise, questioning way of working.
Senta Berger and Sentana
Verhoeven met Senta Berger during a film shoot. They married in 1966 and founded the production company Sentana Filmproduktion. In 1967 he made his directorial debut with Paarungen, adapted from August Strindberg. Their production work gave Verhoeven the ability to develop his own subjects and work independently. Family also remained part of his film environment; his sons Simon and Luca later worked in the film industry as well.
Political cinema
Verhoeven sought subjects that did not smooth over conflict. His Vietnam War film o.k. led to a severe festival crisis at the 1970 Berlinale. Later his attention returned repeatedly to German history, files, memory, refusal and the question of who carries responsibility. As a filmmaker, he made such social conflicts visible through characters and situations.
The White Rose
With Die weiße Rose, Verhoeven told the story of the Munich resistance group around Sophie and Hans Scholl in 1982. The film follows the work of resistance through to its end: leaflets, conversations, doubt, fear and decision. After the film, public attention returned to the fact that the death sentences issued by the People's Court against members of the White Rose had not yet been legally annulled. Verhoeven's film helped make this question politically visible.
The Nasty Girl
Das schreckliche Mädchen followed in 1990, inspired by the case of the Passau school student Anna Rosmus. The film tells of a young woman researching the Nazi history of her hometown and encountering rejection, evasion and closed archives. Its mixture of satire, distance and close observation brought the film international attention; in 1991 it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Later work and death
Verhoeven continued to work for cinema and television, including Mutters Courage, Der unbekannte Soldat, Menschliches Versagen and Let's go!. He died in Grünwald near Munich on 22 April 2024 after a short serious illness. He was 85 years old. His films remain connected with a view of history that does not treat it as closed, but asks about its consequences in everyday life.
