Neil Armstrong (born 5 August 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio; died 25 August 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio) was an American pilot, aerospace engineer, test pilot and astronaut. As commander of Apollo 11, he became the first person to set foot on the surface of the Moon in July 1969. That role made him world famous, but his life was not defined only by one sentence on the lunar surface; it was built through years of work as a pilot, engineer and member of large technical teams.

Armstrong grew up in Ohio and became interested in aircraft early. He learned to fly before he had a driver's license. In 1947 he began studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University, interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy. During the Korean War he flew missions as a naval aviator. These years joined technical knowledge with practical flying experience under serious risk. After the war he returned to Purdue and completed his degree.
In 1955 Armstrong joined NACA, NASA's predecessor, and worked as a research and test pilot. He flew many aircraft types, including the X-15. Test pilots of that period worked at the limits of speed, altitude, materials and controllability. Armstrong was regarded as factual, focused and technically exact. These qualities mattered more in the space program than public performance: he had to understand systems, recognize failures and remain calm under pressure.
Armstrong was selected for NASA's second astronaut group in 1962. His first spaceflight was Gemini 8 in March 1966. With David Scott he achieved the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. Soon afterward, a technical problem sent the capsule into a dangerous roll. Armstrong separated from the docked target, stabilized the spacecraft using the re-entry control system and brought the crew home safely. The mission ended early, but it showed exactly the calmness for which Armstrong was valued.
Apollo 11 launched on 16 July 1969 with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Armstrong commanded the mission, Aldrin piloted the lunar module, and Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module during the landing. On 20 July Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Mare Tranquillitatis. During the descent Armstrong had to intervene manually because the onboard computer was issuing alarms and the planned landing area was unsuitable. The famous moment was therefore also the result of training, teamwork and rapid technical judgment.
During the night of 21 July 1969, Armstrong climbed down the ladder of the lunar module and became the first human being to step onto the Moon. His words about a small step and a giant leap immediately entered world history. Buzz Aldrin followed soon afterward. The two collected samples, set up experiments and documented the surroundings while Michael Collins waited alone in orbit. Apollo 11 was at once a political, scientific and technical event: a success of NASA, industry, research, the crew and many people who never appeared in the frame.
After Apollo 11, Armstrong did not stay long in the spotlight. In 1971 he left NASA and taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He later served on commissions, boards and technical investigations, but remained restrained in his relationship to fame. He rarely used his name for public self-display. This distance shaped his image after 1969: Armstrong did not become a permanent television hero, but remained first of all an engineer and pilot.
Neil Armstrong died in Cincinnati on 25 August 2012 from complications after heart surgery. He was 82 years old. He is remembered for the first step on another celestial body, but also for the quiet precision that made that step possible: training, discipline, technical judgment and the ability to act clearly in decisive seconds.
