His education included Hamilton College, The New School, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University and Ossining High School. He received 4 awards, including Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His cause of death was Alzheimer's disease. He was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
