His education included University of Colorado Boulder, University of Colorado, United States Naval Test Pilot School, United States Naval Academy and Boulder High School. His awards include National Aviation Hall of Fame, United States Astronaut Hall of Fame and International Space Hall of Fame. His cause of death was stroke.
